    The Microbiome Research Technician is a full time position in the Kublin Lab in the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division. The Kublin Lab studies the role of the microbiome in vaccine responses, with an emphasis on how specific microbes and their metabolites modulate host innate and adaptive immune responses. Our work includes developing discrete microbial consortia to manipulate vaccine responses in gnotobiotic murine models, as well as investigating microbiome and immunogenicity data from HIV, malaria, and TB clinical trials. This position is ideally suited for someone who has some molecular biology, microbiology, and/or murine experience and is interested in obtaining hands on research experience prior to attending graduate school. Depending on experience, technicians will also have an opportunity to carry out their own research projects under the supervision of senior researchers in the lab, and will earn authorship on any scientific papers to which they contribute.

    Responsibilities

    The lab technician will manage the daily lab organizational and bench science needs. He/she will develop policies and procedures, maintain IACUC, EMUA, IRB, training, and Biosafety approvals, as well as help out in the laboratory as necessary. This will include opportunities to work with DNA, RNA, qPCR, bacterial culturing, and germ free and conventional rodent handling. The individual will also have secondary responsibilities for lab management, ordering scientific lab supplies, and maintaining equipment. Based on the interest and ability of the technician, s/he may also become solely responsible for the development and execution of independent, small-scale research projects. Successful projects in which the candidate participates may lead to authorship on scientific publications.


    Job Duties:

    1. Ensure laboratory supply meets lab member needs by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed supplies; placing and expediting orders for supplies; verifying receipt of supplies and storing them in an organized manner; and negotiating pricing discounts for supplies, reagents, equipment, and service.

    2. Assist in the development of project/study policies and procedures. Along with other staff, prepare and track all lab activity documents including IACUC approvals, EMUAs, IBC approvals, IRB approvals, Material Transfer Agreements, permit management, and EH&S amendments including chemical inventory, lab safety inspections & compliance, etc.

    3. Ensure all laboratory staff receive and remain current with the required training, including Laboratory Safety, Biosafety, Blood Borne Pathogens, and Human Subjects.

    4. Assist in the generation and analysis of experimental data. Track all data in appropriate electronic or physical laboratory notebook.

    5. Coordinate space and equipment planning and utilization, evaluating current project/study needs, overseeing the acquisition of space and equipment, anticipating and planing for future needs.. Coordinate equipment maintenance repairs, purchases and usage.

    6. Assist with the project and budget reviews, ensuring that all lab expenditures are in accordance with grant guidelines and requirements.

    7. Participation in lab meetings and presentation of data will be required Develop working relationships with key vendors that will support the laboratory.

    8. Manage and update laboratory website.

    9. Assist with basic molecular biology and microbiology tasks within the laboratory, as well as with mouse handling.

    10. Perform other responsibilities as required.

    Qualifications

    • BA/BS in biology or a related field and a minimum of one year experience in a laboratory environment is required
    • Prior experience with basic molecular biology techniques including DNA and RNA preparation, PCR, and cloning, and/or basic microbiology or rodent handling is preferred.
    • Solid computer skills and experience using programs in Microsoft Office Suite and some experience in bioinformatic analysis is a plus
    • The ideal candidate will have solid organization and verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to interact cooperatively with all levels of staff.
