    This is a fulltime position in the Hadland Lab in the Stem Cell and Gene Therapy Program of the Clinical Research Division.  We are seeking a candidate with an undergraduate degree in biology or biomedical sciences and basic research experience in cell culture and molecular biology techniques, preferably also with experience in immunohistochemistry and microscopy.  The position is ideally suited for an enthusiastic candidate seeking to obtain one to two years of research experience in the fields of stem cell and developmental biology toward the goal of progressing to graduate/professional school.  The candidate will conduct research under the supervision of the PI and senior researchers in the lab, may also have the opportunity to take on independent projects depending on experience, and will earn authorship toward scientific publications to which they contribute.

    Responsibilities

    Our lab is focused on understanding the fundamental mechanisms that regulate the embryonic development of hematopoietic stem cells using mouse embryo models and mouse and human pluripotent stem cells. The technician in this position will primarily focus on evaluating expression of novel candidate genes/pathways in HSC development using RNA FISH and immunohistochemistry in tissue sections of murine embryos.  Duties will include implementation of advanced techniques in multiplexed, single molecule RNA FISH to evaluate interactions between niche cells and developing HSC, including downstream microscopy and bioinformatic analysis. Other research responsibilities in the lab may involve culture of cell lines (including embryonic/pluripotent stem cells) and primary cells (including endothelial cells and HSC), flow cytometry, molecular biology and cloning, and manipulation/dissection of murine embryo tissues. The individual will also have secondary responsibilities for preparing reagents, ordering scientific lab supplies, maintaining equipment, and assisting with various lab projects as requested by the principal investigator and senior research staff.

     

    Job Duties

    1. Perform experiments at the bench level to support investigative work.
    1. Prepare and maintain laboratory reagents, stocks, cultures or cell lines.
    1. Perform and modify documented protocols and assays.
    1. Maintain laboratory records and compile data on experiments and assays.
    1. Interpret and report on experimental results.
    1. Perform statistical analysis of test results and prepare written reports on work performed 
    1. Perform computation analysis of imaging data and maintain well-organized and clearly documented files of downstream data.
    1. Operate and carry out basic maintenance of laboratory equipment.
    1. Order and maintain appropriate levels of supplies.
    1. Perform other duties as required.

    Qualifications

    BA/BS in biology or a related field and experience in a laboratory environment is required.  Hands on experience with basic cell culture techniques, molecular biology techniques including DNA and RNA preparation, PCR, and cloning is required.  Experience with tissue processing, staining, immunohistochemistry, FISH, microscopy, and image analysis are desirable but not essential.  Routine computer skills are necessary and some experience in bioinformatic analysis is a plus.  Participation in lab meetings and presentation of data will be required.  The ideal candidate will have superior organization and communication skills and the ability to interact cooperatively with all levels of staff.
