The incumbent will work under the direction and supervision of James M. Olson, which includes his role as the Director of the Protein Therapeutics Program and Director of the Molecular Design and Therapeutics Core (MDT). Dr. Olson’s laboratory and research program, along with management and oversight of the MDT are situated in the Clinical Research Division (CRD).


The incumbent, in collaboration with Dr. Olson, the Executive Director, CRD, Fred Hutch leadership which includes leaders in Business Development, Advancement (Development), and Communications, along with other scientists and researchers will develop partnerships supporting the Protein Therapeutics Program and MDT Core. In addition, the incumbent will steward all management and administrative responsibilities of the Protein Therapeutics Program and MDT Core.


  • Overall strategy development, in partnership with faculty and program leaders, with a high priority on securing and managing multi-year strategic partnerships
  • Work directly with PI and other key individuals to plan for future growth and expansion of the overall research program., including infrastructure, facilities and equipment
  • Work with principal investigator in management of program staff, overseeing hiring, training, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, and layoff/termination issues
  • Represent Dr. Olson and collaborators in discussions with Finance, Development, Communications, Business Development, Human Resources, Shared Resources and Fred Hutch Divisions
  • Facilitate collaborative partnerships across the center
  • Ensure programs comply with established regulations such as IRB regulations, grant and contract regulations and Center policies and procedures; to include overall research program financial oversight and grant management
  • Supervise management of a grant and contract portfolio including management of grant and contract pre-award/renewal/post-award components and investigation of potential sources of funding.
  • External Communications: Partnering with Hutch Communications and Advancement/Development on media stories and philanthropic engagement. Communcating with patient families, Seattle Children’s Hospital, the University of Washington. Crafting of potential engagements with partners, collaborators, and contract research organizations
  • As needed: Perform other responsibilities as required



  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Leadership experience in establishing and managing multi-year strategic partnerships between academic, government, non-profit, biotech or pharmaceutical organizations

  • At least 5 years of professional experience in a leadership position that required the management of senior level personnel and a demonstrated ability to effectively lead individual teams and cross-platform technologies to address process transfer and process improvement efforts
  • Management/Fiscal Budgetary: Five years of progressively complex management and administrative experience. Experience in fiscal and budgetary planning, monitoring and oversight, including research administration, HR and related personnel management, operations, and staff development
  • Experience with establishing timelines, benchmarking accountability and overseeing program and project budgets
  • Management and Grant/Research Activities: Experience in grant/contract management
  • Other: Strong computer skills including word processing, database programs, and spreadsheets


  • Master’s Degree or PhD
