The Infection Preventionist (IP) position oversees surveillance activities and collaborates with other clinical departments to perform environmental assessments for potential infection risks. This position will advise and consult with leaders, providers, staff, and contracted staff on best practice prevention strategies to protect patients, care team members and visitors from contamination or infection.

 

The IP develops and provides education regarding infection prevention practices such as isolation, hand hygiene and proper use of personal protective equipment. The IP also develops and reviews SCCA policies and procedures to ensure alignment with the rigorous standards established by the Centers for Disease Control, OSHA, CMS, Joint Commission, Department of Health and other applicable regulatory and accreditation agencies. The ideal IP applicant will:

  • Be collaborative, hard-working and have experience as an educator.
  • Have experience with basic epidemiologic principles and statistical methods to hospital associated pathogens and the skills to develop targeted prevention approaches for high-risk cancer and transplant patients.
  • Be comfortable with the review of clinical records, laboratory reports and other epidemiologic data needed for job related activities.
  • Fulfill required public reporting commitments to NHSN/CMS, CDC, and the Washington State Hospital Association for infection rates for CLABSI, CAUTI, MRSA and C. difficile.
  • Collaborate with center-based Facilities Engineering, Environmental Health and Safety, and Housekeeping to provide ongoing surveillance and assessment of clinic environmental factors such as water supply systems, air quality, room humidity and pressure, and environmental cleaning.
  • Collaborate with Occupational Health to support staff exposed to infections at work, and promote efforts to limit spread from clinical/non-clinical staff to patients in the clinic (e.g. vaccination, sick policies)
  • Prepare and organize weekly and months infection prevention meetings, and conduct infection prevention rounds in all patient care areas.
  • Participate in investigations of infectious outbreaks using standard epidemiologic tools as well as novel computer-based methods (e.g TheraDoc).
  • Be comfortable in working with institutional health IT to gather infection-related data and information necessary for public reports and center-based quality improvement efforts.
  • Participate in quality/performance improvement activities, and direct programs that target infection prevention (e.g. hand hygiene).
  • Insure that the proper disclosure of reportable pathogens, and perform required documentation for interventions, outbreak investigations, and safety concerns.
  • Assist in the organization of regularly scheduled infection prevention meetings and dissemination of recommendations.
  • Plan, organize, develop and implement education programs for staff, patients and families which convey specialized knowledge and skills to increase staff/patient and family awareness of existence of nosocomial infections; techniques for avoidance and preventive measures to provide a safe environment for staff and patients.

Maintain familiarity with national standards and compliance requirements of regulating and accrediting bodies such as The Joint Commission, WA State Department of Health, CDC, OSHA, and FDA.

Responsibilities

Identification of Infectious Disease Processes:

  • Knowledgeable of infectious diseases
  • Able to interpret diagnostic/laboratory reports
  • Understands the basic characteristics of microbiology/virology (bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses)
  • Differentiates between normal flora vs. pathogenic flora by site (respiratory tract gastrointestinal tract, skin, eye, ear, bone/joints, blood, etc.)
  • Knowledgeable of multi-drug-resistant organisms (MDRO) identification and infection prevention implications (i.e. MRSA, VRE, CRE, etc.)
  • Maintains current understanding of highly infectious pathogens (e.g. MERS-CoV, Measles, etc.)
  • Understands the role of the host, hospital/ambulatory environment, external factors, and human factors in the transmission of major pathogens.

Surveillance of Epidemiologic Investigations:

  • Reviews surveillance data for HAIs (i.e. CLABSI, MRSA bacteremia, C-Diff, etc.)
  • Collaborate with IP Medical Director in the investigation of clusters/outbreaks
  • Knowledgeable of standardized definitions (NHSN, CMS, etc.) for the identification and public reporting of Required HAI
  • Has experience and comfort with outbreak investigations

Preventing/Controlling the Transmission of Infectious Agents:

  • Knowledgeable of how to identify and define each components of the change of infection (infectious agent, mode of transmission, portal of entry, etc.)
  • Serve as organizational hand hygiene expert; knowledgeable of CDC and WHO guidelines; performs ongoing evaluation of hand hygiene monitoring program and outcomes to identify opportunities to improve; knowledgeable of state fire code related to use of alcohol hand gel (NFPA life safety codes).
  • Serves as organizational expert on standard precautions/transmission-based precautions and procedures. Performs ongoing evaluation of adherence to policies and procedures; monitors for opportunities to improve.
  • Serves as consultants to care teams and leads for management of suspected TB cases, CLABSI and CUATI prevention, C-Diff, MCRO’s safe injection practices, etc.
  • Provides consultation and expertise to the following organizational functions:
    • Disinfection, sterilization of equipment, environmental cleaning, facilities management (maintenance, renovation and construction), water management, purchasing of IP specific products – use and location (hand gel, PPE, safety devices).
  • Serves as the organizational expert (in consult with the IP Medical Director) on the practical applications of isolation precautions related to: hand hygiene, management of isolation patients, gloving, gowns, masks (N-95 & PAPR), eye protection, face shields, handling of linen, patient care equipment and supplies, routine and terminal cleaning, requirements to discontinue isolation, requirement for patient placement precautions (negative pressure rooms, cohorting, etc.)

Employee/Occupational Health:

    • Maintains currency with licensing, regulatory, and organization requirement for healthcare worker immunizations (MMR, Influenza, Tdap, Varicella, Hep B)
    • Is knowledgeable of bloodborne pathogen exposure control plan and OSHA rule.
    • Collaborates with IP Medical Director, FH EH&S to determine type of testing performed to monitor staff for exposure to TB.
    • Collaborates with IP Medical Director, FH EH&S in the development of the annual flu vaccination campaign; is knowledgeable of required CMS and state healthcare personnel influenza vaccination reporting requirements.
    • Education & Research
  • In collaboration with the IP Medical Director, determines required annual IP education and target audiences.
  • Updates orientation and annual education as necessary.
  • Develops/delivers educational materials for in-services.
  • Knowledgeable of how patients/families are educated in IP; develop materials as needed to improve patient/family understanding IP strategies.
  • Knowledgeable in identifying and interpreting relevant studies for issues related to infection prevention.
  • Knowledgeable of basic adult education methods and material development best suited for adult learners and other targeted audiences.
  • Willingness to contribute to scholarly output in infection control, and have an interest in developing leadership roles within national organizations (e.g. APIC, ICHE, etc.)

 

Professional Development:

  • Participate in continuing educational activities at the department, state and national levels to promote personal growth and maintain a current knowledge base commensurate with the latest research and knowledge.
  • Familiar with outside expert resources (CDC, WA Dept. of Health, national organizations such as 3CIC, etc.)
  • Participate and contribute to the local APIC chapter
  • Network with IPs across the Alliance and externally, to discuss common concerns and solutions
  • Serves as a “continuous learner” – continuously advancing professional skills, knowledge and development.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Healthcare associated degree
  • RNs must have current license in the State of Washington.
  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience in a hospital or ambulatory setting
  • 2-5 years of experience in infection prevention with documented evidence of education and/or training related to infection surveillance, prevention and control
  • Knowledge or interest in microbiology and epidemiology
  • Professional certification in infection control (CIC)

Preferred:

  • BSN
