The Hutch Data Commonwealth (HDC) represents a new organization within the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center with a mission to develop new capabilities and resources to facilitate the center’s interaction with large and complex data sets. HDC data scientists partner with center investigators in research leveraging high-dimensional data to drive requirements into the HDC product team where data and software engineers are responsible for developing and supporting robust data management and analysis platforms and tools.

 

Responsibilities

This role will have the primary responsibility for the continued growth of the agile scrum methodology, both from a process and tooling perspective, within HDC.  As a servant leader, the scrum master partners closely with the Product Management and Engineering teams on the delivery of projects across the breadth of HDC.

 

Core Responsibilities

  • Strongly serve and support the Product Owner and Development Team in their quest to deliver amazing products.
  • Provide all support to the team using a servant leadership style and leading by example. This person should personify Scrum and Agile.
  • Guide and Coach the Scrum Team and organization on how to use Agile/Scrum practices and values to deliver amazing products.
  • Guide and Coach both the Scrum Team and the Development team on how to get the most out of self-organization.
  • Guide and Coach both the Scrum Team and the Development team on self-organizing to fill in the intentional gaps left in the Agile/Scrum frameworks.
  • Assess the Scrum Maturity of the team and organization and coach the team to higher levels of maturity, at a pace that is sustainable and comfortable for the team and organization.
  • Remove impediments or guide the team to remove impediments by finding the right personnel to remove the impediment.
  • Build a trusting and safe environment where problems can be raised without fear of blame, retribution, or being judged, with an emphasis on problem solving
  • Facilitate getting the work done without coercion, assigning, or dictating the work.
  • Facilitate discussion, decision making, and conflict resolution.
  • Assist with internal and external communication, improve transparency, and radiate information.
  • Support and educate the Product Owner, especially with respect to refining and managing the product backlog.

Qualifications

Required Skills/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering or equivalent experience.
  • First level Scrum Master Certification (PSM I, CSM).
  • Experience as the Scrum Master for at least two years for a software development team.
  • Experience being on multiple Scrum teams in a variety of different contexts (different team sizes, different organizations, different cultures, co-located vs. distributed, etc.).
  • Skills and knowledge of servant leadership, facilitation, situational awareness, conflict resolution, continual improvement, empowerment, and increasing transparency.
  • The ability to distinguish and articulate the difference between what "is Scrum" and what is "not Scrum".
  • A track record of continued and recent education in Scrum, including training, conferences, user groups, self-study, etc.
  • Knowledge of other approaches discussed in the agile space: XP, Kanban, Crystal, FDD, etc.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with widely successful agile techniques: User Stories, Automated testing practices like BDD, Continuous Integration, Continuous Testing, Pairing, Agile Games.
  • Applicable knowledge of the technologies used by the team.
  • Previous experience as a collaborative leader.
  • Excellent communication and mentoring skills.

 

Preferred Skills/Experience (Any of these is a plus)

  • Second or third level scrum master certification.
  • Experience as a software or data engineer in a development organization using the scrum methodology.
