The Cape Town HVTN Immunology Laboratory (CHIL;, a division of the Hutchinson Center Research Institute of South Africa (HCRISA), performs assays compliant with GCLP guidelines to analyze immune responses elicited to HIV vaccines in clinical trials. The laboratory is a new, state-of-the art facility located in the Gardens neighborhood of the Cape Town city bowl.


The purpose of this position is to oversee the physical space and equipment of the laboratory and to manage laboratory projects under the direction of the laboratory management. This position will report to laboratory management and will work independently in performing daily responsibilities, referring issues on as necessary. Skills and knowledge will be applied in coordinating operational and administrative activities necessary to smooth functioning of a clinical research laboratory. 


Laboratory Operations

  • Ensure lab operations follow established Standard Operating Procedures and GCLP guidelines.
  • Coordinate equipment maintenance repairs, purchases and usage.
  • Manage the on-call system and handle queries from personnel when laboratory alarms are triggered.
  • Develop working relationships with key vendors that will support the laboratory.
  • Coordinate purchase of laboratory supplies and equipment to ensure laboratory is fully stocked and well-equipped at all times.
  • Monitor lab resources such as space, equipment and personnel, ensuring that current laboratory resource needs are met and future program resource needs are anticipated.
  • Assist with preparation of and adherence to lab budgets.
  • Monitor service level agreement compliance by service providers and perform annual agreement renewals.
  • Manage, train and supervise laboratory staff if required, in conjunction with laboratory management.
  • Work with QA staff to ensure proper QA procedures are developed and followed.
  • Supervise specimen receipt and handling and coordinate international shipments. 


Laboratory Safety

  • Address all Environmental Health &Safety issues and ensure laboratory compliance.
  • Oversee documents required to satisfy regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare files for audits and attend audits as requested, assisting in addressing any issues raised at the audits.


Project Management

  • Work with the Lab Director, other investigators and senior management; maintain realistic project timelines within related laboratory scope of work and budget.


Other duties, as required


  • BTech, BA or BSc in a related field required, preferably Biomedical Technology or equivalent diploma (Clinical Pathology, Haematology, Microbiology or Immunology).
  • Minimum of ten years experience in a routine or research laboratory setting; previous lab management experience an advantage .
  • Experience working under GCLP guidelines desired.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including clear written summaries of calls and meetings.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Must be experienced and fully competent in Microsoft Office, especially Word, Outlook, and Excel. Experience in Microsoft SharePoint and Project desired.
